Tree dahlia bud watch, 2007

My tree dahlias (Dahlia imperialis) have grown taller and taller each year. Yikes! Of my three main canes, one snapped but two remain. Threats against this November bloomer include wind and frost. Both fingers way crossed.

I'd like to train them to bloom a little lower to the ground, but I'm not sure of the best time to head them back.

Wish me luck!

Is this the double white or lavender? Blooming yet? Sounds like these need Alaska Tomato cages (much bigger than Texas cages ;-)
This plant must suck up alot of water...but tempting...

  2. Hi Cloverann,

Mine is the lavender form. It should be blooming toward the end of November. Maybe earlier this year.

I think we're beyond the cage stage... though I'd love to hear more about these Alaska Tomato Cages. My bud-topped stems are around twenty feet tall this year!

I haven't found tree dahlias to be terribly thirsty, especially considering what a slacker of a waterer I can be.
