Garden Shop Echium

Not a great shot, but it shows the incredible echium plants (spiky ones in background) at the garden shop, along with this really neat woven arch.

These are beautiful. When do you water them and how much? Pat

  2. Oh, the echium? They're pretty drought-tolerant but are biennial (leaves the first year, flowers the second) and a bit marginal for Sacramento. Worth a shot, though, I'd say.

I remember Pat Rubin of the Bee writing about growing them successfully in our area. I have a young echium that I bought at Annie's Annuals a few months ago. We'll see how it does... It's certainly not a plant you see all over Sacramento. Too hot in summer, too cold in winter here probably. It sure is happy in Mendocino, though!
